Dark Souls Lore: Velka, the Goddess of Sin

Velka, the Goddess of Sin. The woman with jet black hair. An entity that has so much influence over the world of Dark Souls, yet if you play the game blindly you'll never know she exists. But just how much influence does she have? What are her goals, her intentions? And how does she without the player's knowledge, manipulate them into doing exactly what she wants? This is an article that will talk about Velka's intentions, her role in the story of Dark Souls, and more importantly her ultimate goal. I will be using item descriptions, the locations of said items in the game, and dialogue from one key character to help illustrate just how much pull Velka has in the story. So without further ado, let us begin.

Velka is the Goddess of Sin. She uses crows as messengers and servants of her will. She is associated with the color black, and is the patron deity of Cairim, a city we will get into later on. She is also described as a rogue deity, another point we will touch on later. As stated previously, she uses crows to act as her messengers. At the very beginning of the game, you are taken from the Undead Asylum by a giant crow. This crow can later be used to go back and forth between Lordran and the Undead Asylum. Coincidence? Perhaps. But there is a piece of evidence connecting the crow and Velka, as well as another character and location. If you return to the Undead Asylum, you will find an item called the "Peculiar Doll". This item allows you to enter a place called the "Painted World of Ariamas".

The Painted World is considered by fans of Dark Souls to be a place where many unused ideas for Dark Souls were placed. And the most interesting enemy in this world, are the crow people.

Interesting isn't it? Well it only gets more interesting from here. Lore wise, the Painted World is a place where the gods banished things that were dangerous to them. There are Phalanxes [which resemble Hollowed humans more than the original Phalanx design.]

In addition there are Hollows with cancerous growths, that when killed exude a toxic mist. There are giant white rats, Skeleton Wheels, and an Undead Dragon. The reason this world ties into my theory on Velka, is that there are artifacts in the Painted World that are used by Velka and her followers. The Pardoner gear including Velka's Rapier and Velka's catalyst. This all seems to imply that most of the things found in the Painted World are associated with Velka, whether they are creatures influenced by her power [ The Crow people] or are artifacts that are used by her followers. Two very important plot related objects are found in this world though, both protected by crow people. One, is the Dark Ember which can be used to make occult weapons. Occult weapons are capable of killing gods and if used on the final boss cause large amounts of damage, so it makes sense such a dangerous Ember has been sealed away. But that's not the most interesting thing in the Painted World. The Red Sign Soapstone is, which again is protected by Crow people. The Red Sign Soapstone is used by Darkwraiths to leave signs so people can request to be invaded. Game play mechanics aside, why is an artifact used by the Darkwraiths, sealed away in a world where almost everything is connected to Velka? We will come to this plot point in a bit but let's add a bit more evidence to this connectionbetween Velka and the Darkwraiths for later. This statue.

This statue is found in the Painted World facing the half dragon Priscilla who we will get to in a moment. The reason I bring this statue up is two fold, number 1, the statue has black hair [if you look closely enough] and has a small child statue right next to it holding her, almost like a child holding its mother, and number 2, because this statue can be found in the city of New Londo, the city of the Darkwraiths. To wrap up Velka and the Painted World, Priscilla, uses an ability called Lifehunt which she uses through her scythe and if you kill the crow people they will drop Souvenirs of Reprisal which we will get into later.

New Londo was a city fashioned after Anor Londo, the city of the gods. It was ruled over by Four Kings who Lord Gwyn picked himself. The Four Kings were given a shard of Gwyn's Lord Soul but were seduced by the art of Lifedrain and turned their knights into Darkwraiths. As the Four Kings became corrupted by Lifedrain, they were sealed away by the city being flooded. Now, some interesting things to note about the lore of this event and the city. How they are connected to Velka, and how it sheds light on her motives.

First off, look closely at the armor of the Darkwraiths. if you look closely you'll see that their armor has black feathers on the cowl and shoulder pauldrons. Black feathers, kind of like crow feathers huh? Now other Dark Souls Lore video makers have pointed this out but it can be written off as a coincidence. If you don't know about the Red Sign Soapstone which can be found in the Painted World. Or about the similarities between Lifehunt, an ability only Priscilla has, and Lifedrain. Or that there are statues of Velka in New Londo.

Which now leads us to the last bits of information on Velka. The Souvenirs of Reprisal which you can loot off of the crow people can be given to Gywndolin to help you advance in the Blades of the Darkmoon. Gywndolin is rewarding you for killing Velka's servants. The people we see from Cairim, Lautrec, Oswald, and Chester are schemers, and liars. Lautrec is collecting humanity for a goddess called Fina, who we know next to nothing about, Oswald is a Pardoner, one who can pardon you for sins committed against other players, or to help you accuse other players. Chester's true motives are unknown except that he tries to kill you when you attempt to advance further into Oolacille. All of Velka's miracles rely on intelligence rather than faith implying that she wants intelligent followers, or useful followers rather than devout ones. But now, comes the last line that cemented my theory. Oswald of Cairim, the Pardoner says this every time you walk away.

"It is only human to commit a sin."

Now that all evidence has been, all notes laid on the table, let us begin dissecting the motives of Velka.

I believe that Velka is not only the Goddess of Sin, but a goddess of humanity. She has existed since the Dark Soul has existed or maybe even predates it and the Lords. Her color, black, is the same color as humanity sprites, or more specifically the fragments of the Dark Soul. She aids your character, the chosen undead by spiriting you away to Lordran where you can go on your journey. Throughout your journey you strike down the Lords, and eventually Gwyn. If you choose not to light the last bonfire the Age of Dark will be ushered in. I believe Velka is using the player character for her own schemes, and has been for last thousands of years, trying to usurp the Lords and rule over humanity. You the player are just her pawn, part of her schemes. Her scheme to usher in the Age of Dark, an age where she rules over the world instead of Gwyn. Because Velka is a schemer, just like the rest of Cairim. She plotted the uprising against the Lords before the start of the game, which you read about in the Catacombs off of the Occult Club. She failed in this and everything related to her was banished and sealed away in the Painted World. After this she managed to sway the Primordial Serpents Kaathe and Frampt to serve her, perhaps they knew her rule would be inevitable since the Flames were dying anyways. Kaathe tricked the residents of Oolacille to awaken Manus, the Father of the Abyss and such unleashed the Abyss. Artorias the Abysswalker is dispatched from Anor Londo to stop the spread of the Abyss but fails. The chosen undead is transported to the past and stops the Abyss while also slaying Artorias. Much later on, Kaathe seduces the Four Kings with the art of Lifedrain. It is likely that they may have worshipped Velka before their descent anyways due to the presence of the statues of Velka. The Four Kings and their Darkwraiths are sealed away, thus leading to Velka losing yet more pawns to usher in her Age of Dark. She creates a prophecy speaking of a Chosen Undead who will come to Lordran and will save the world, when in reality this chosen undead will be the world's undoing. They will be used by Velka to usher in an Age of Dark, and once their purpose is complete, they will most likely be discarded.

I hope you all have enjoyed this article and like me are looking forward to Dark Souls 2. Thank you for joining me for this and before you leave, look at this screenshot from Dark Souls 2 and see if you notice anything similar to a certain statue.

Top Ten Worst Souls Bosses

You know for every great boss in the Souls series there has to be that one boss that is cheap, lame, or just badly designed. Let me make this clear, no video game is perfect. And these bosses don't ruin the Souls series for me or hurt my love towards them [aside from Number 1 but we'll get to that.] So without further ado and hopefully so that these kinds of mistakes can be avoided in future installments of the Souls series, here are the top ten worst bosses in the Souls series.

10.) Dragon God

Let me say this really quick. I love this boss. But I hate it too. Its not any other boss in Demon's Souls. You have to sneak from pillar to pillar avoiding this thing's gaze, and if it sees you it can kill you instantly with one attack. And the way you kill it? Sneak to two harpoon guns on both sides of it, impaling its arms before moving to its helpless head and finishing it off. Oh and you have to smash through piles of rubble, which alert the Dragon God. So unless you have a lot of health you're going to die. A lot. This boss is basically one giant environment hazard. Why is it so low then? I love dragons, and I love this thing's design. Besides if you have Water Veil and Warding, its not so bad.

9.) Leechmonger

One of the things I love about the Souls series is the lore present in both games. Its very fascinating to me learning about the motivations of characters, deities, or even the history of certain bosses through item descriptions or dialogue. SO as you can imagine the fact that the Leechmonger has no lore infuritates me to no end. This thing has absolutely no lore associated with it aside from the fact that's a monster made of thousands of leeches.Kind of cool but with no context it losses its cool factor. And the boss itself is soooo easy. Pathetically easy. If you're a mage you can just throw fireballs at it from a safe distance and kill it quick and if you're a melee build, its attacks do so little damage you can just tank it. And if you have a Dragonforged weapon..... holy crap this thing dies quick.

8.) Maneaters

You know there are rumors that Demon's Souls wasn't all the way finished when it was released, and when I fought these two for the first time, I believed it. This boss is the very definition of cheap. You're fighting it on an incredibly narrow bridge, it has a powerful charge attack which will knock you back several feet, including off the ledge for an instant death. In addition it can buff itself with magic unless you cut off its tail. Now this doesn't sound that bad i know, but here's the worst part. This thing can fly. And it often does fly. Leaving you on the bridge on high alert so it doesn't knock you off the bridge by surprise. Oh and if you don't kill the first Maneater fast enough, the second one will show up and you'll have to fight two of them. SO often times you'll be fighting the first Maneater, then it'll fly off.... and it won't come back for several moments. Then it'll land, then it'll take off again. This process will repeat several times until the second Maneater shows up. Which most of the time means you'll have to deal with two hard bosses with full health. In addition the lore is weak too. They're both just demons made by the Old Monk. Riveting.

7.) Gravelord Nito

Okay I should not be putting one of the Four Lords on this list but Nito himself is a pushover. His attacks are really easy to read and avoid, and his Aoe attack is easy to get away from. But that doesn't sound like a bad boss, I might just be good at it. So why is it on this list? Because the challenge from this fight comes from Nito's skeleton minions. For those of you who haven't played the Souls series, skeletons can't die permanently unless you kill them with a divine weapon. And when you fight Nito he'll have a bunch of small skeletons attacking you that can cause bleeding and poison, and he has two giant skeletons in the cave that can kill you in two hits. You are fighting Death himself, and his minions are more powerful than he is! Oh and if you're wondering why using a divine weapon seems so bad, its because divine weapons suck.

6.) Gaping Dragon

Anyone here ever fought Yiazmat from Final Fantasy 12? You know, that boss that had 10 million HP? The one that can take four hours to kill? Well this boss is nowhere near that bad, but it still has a massive amount of health and really high defenses. Its attacks are predictable and easy to dodge, you can cut off its tail weakening it significantly, but it just won't die. Even if you have Solaire and Lautrec helping you this fight takes forever, and that's what I hate about it. Bosses with lots of health aren't challenging or powerful, they're just hard to kill. And the lore? It's a descendant of the ancient dragons. That's it.

5.) Centipede Demon

This boss is proof that Dark Souls wasn't completely finished. You have to fight this boss in a giant lake of lava while you fight on a very narrow shore of rock. This boss can move freely in the lava, has a long and wide range with powerful attacks, but that's not why this boss sucks. Inaccurate hitboxes are why. You can hit this boss in the face with your sword, and most of the time it won't even register. And what's worse since you're fighting so close to the lava and this boss can knock you back with each attack, death is almost always a certainty. I just hate the artificial difficulty of this boss, if you cut off his tail you'll get a ring that lets you walk on lava at which point this boss becomes pathetic. You know, when the hitboxes register. Oh and the lore? Born from the ring that you get from this boss.

4.) Firesage Demon

Easy. Uninspired. This is pretty much the Asylum Demon or Stray Demon. The catch? Its on fire. This boss plays out, exactly like the previously two mentioned bosses. There is no reason for this boss to exist, especially considering the Centipede Demon is immediately after this boss. I wish I had more to say but what can I say? You've fought this boss twice already, and the lore is practically non-existant. Its supposedly the first fire sorcerer. And?

3.) Four Kings

This boss has a lot of stuff I love. Great music, great design, and great lore. But this boss is broken. Incredibly so. The Four Kings has an insane amount of health, has a very wide and long range of attack, and true to its name there are Four of them that can spawn. You start off with one, but as the fight goes on more will spawn. These bosses can take a large chunk of health with each attack, and they have long range attacks and Aoe attacks. In addition their high health and defense means that unless you have a REALLY good weapon, you'll have to fight two of them at the bare minimum. Which means unless you're fine with not locking on to them so you can keep both on sight, you will die a lot as you focus on one of the King, while the other attacks you from your blind spots. The worst part though? If all four of them spawn, they have an instant death attack.

2.) Dirty Colossus

Another boss from the Valley of Defilement? Yep, I hate both of them. But I hate this one more for one main reason. Its incredibly boring. All this boss does is shoot swarms of flies at you. That's it. Oh it may swing its arm at you if you get too close, but otherwise it just aims its arm cannon at you and shoots flies. the flies are easy to dodge, and even the bosses melee attack is easily dodged or even blocked. And the lore? Its non-existent. I mean, there is nothing. It may be the corrupted knight who wielded the Moonlight Greatsword, but that's a bit of a stretch. Just... boring.

1.)Bed of Chaos

I hate this boss. I hate it so much. Lore wise, this is the Witch of Izalith and two of her daughters who have become the source of all demons. You need her soul in order to progress to the last area of the game. Sounds exciting right? Its not. Its tedious, frustrating, and plays nothing like any other boss in Dark Souls. This is basically the Dragon God, only worse. You have to attack two orbs on both sides of the boss and destroy them but when you do, the Bed grows fiery limbs that can hit you from a much longer range. Now granted, the damage you recieve from this boss isn't that bad. And it moves slowly so if you see it, you can dodge it. But here's the catch. When you destroy the first orb, the floor starts collapsing, and if you fall into one of the holes, you die instantly [obviously.] and the arms can knock you into the holes since you're not watching the boss. Meaning you will die more often from falling than the boss itself killing you. And then you have to run all the back to the boss and if you haven't unlocked the shortcut, well I hope you enjoy fighting dragons. When you finally do destroy both orbs the floor in front of the Bed will collapse at which point you have to land on a narrow root and move inside the Bed to attack its heart. Not so bad? Wrong. The Bed can summon giant pillars of fire inside it that can kill you instantly or at take off at least half you health. And when you get to the heart? Its a bug. A bug that can't attack you, and dies in one hit. The only good thing about this boss? When you destroy an orb, it stays destroyed. Meaning you don't have to redo it when you die. But it doesn't change the fact that this boss is terrible. The best thing about Souls bosses is learning the bosses attack patterns and adapting to them, so that when you beat them you know it was from your own skill. That sense of accomplishment comes as a result as your own skill as a player. But this boss? You have to be lucky, or be REALLY good with a bow. This boss goes against the entire philosophy of the Souls games and in the end is just an environemental hazard rather than a good boss fight. The worst boss in the Souls games.

Hope you enjoyed this list, and I await your differing opinions.
